Anna Norman celebrates 104 years
Cadillac News February 8, 2008
TUSTIN - When Anna Norma was born in 1904, statistics put her life expectancy at about 48 years. This Saturday, when she blows out the candles on her birthday cake, there will be 104 little flames.
Anna was born at the dawn of the 20th century in the same year as Cary Grant, Joan Crawford and Salvador Dali.
The rich and the famous who shared her birth date are long gone.
Anna has outlived them all, spending most of her years in a small farmhouse on a quiet hillside near Tustin.
The centenarian said she has no idea why she has lived so long.
She even confessed that it kind of "scares her" to have lasted this long. Anna turns 104 on Feb. 9, while most of her relatives died in their 70s and 80s. She?s been a widow for 36 years and her only daughter died at the age of 72.
But Anna is a woman who looks on the bright side. She has a sweet smile and exudes a feeling of joy.
When asked how she stays so happy, she hesitated, saying that it was a hard question to answer.
"It all depends on how you feel," she admitted. "Lots of times you feel good. Then everything goes fine. I feel pretty good," she smiled. "I have my ups and downs like everybody. Otherwise, I feel really good."
When she was 85, Anna broke her first hip. She broke her second hip when she was 102. But with the help of a walker, she can navigate the entire main floor of her house. She still cooks her own meals and likes to play a mean game of cribbage.
Her cribbage partner is her son Jan Norman, 64, a recent retiree. Since last spring the two have played 500 games of the card game.
"I used to crochet and knit," she explained. "I made over 100 quilts, piece quilts. I used to crochet bedspreads. Now I can't see to do any of that. I do miss that."
Every Thursday her 80-year-old niece visits to help with chores, to wash and set Anna's hair, and to play a few games of dice.
Anna is looking forward to the relatives arriving from Chicago and Grand Rapids for her birthday celebration. They will bring a cake and presents.
"It's my biggest thrill whenever I can get the kids home," she said of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. "The kids bring stuff and they just shower it on me."
She said the biggest blessing in her life is family.
"Having a good family life is the best thing that happens to anybody," she said. "The kids all being good...they are all straight. When there's no worry with the kids, I think that helps more than anything."
In addition, when pressed for advice on how to live a long and healthy life, Anna said that she eats a lot of oatmeal and that she makes a point of trying to be agreeable.
Centenarians on the rise:
Demographers say that centenarians are the fastest-growing segment of society, people 100 years old and above.
Over the past century, life expectancy in the United States has increased about 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When Ann Norman was born in 1904 the life expectancy was 47.3 years. For someone born in 2002, life expectancy had reached 77.3 years.
According to the 2006 U.S. Census, 1.7 to 1.8 percent of Michigan's population is 85 years and older. It is estimated that there are currently 40,000 people over 100 year's old living in the United States.
